Library Computer System Change

This guide provides information about the Kalamazoo College Library's transition to a new system in August 2018.

MeLCat During Transition

Why are we suspending MeLCat temporarily?

Before the Library can switch to the new system, all outstanding MeLCat loans must be returned. Processing returned materials can take several weeks due to late returns and missing materials. On March 21st, 2018, MeLCat services from the Kalamazoo College Library will be suspended temporarily (just after Winter Quarter finals). MeLCat services will resume in August 2018, once the new system is up.

Will we have access to MeLCat during the transition?

Yes! Kalamazoo College students, faculty, and staff will still have access to MeLCat resources through the Kalamazoo Public Library (KPL)!

You must pick up and return items at a Kalamazoo Public Library location (the downtown library or any branch).

What if I can't get to KPL?

You can still use Interlibrary Loan (ILLiad) for academic materials that will be delivered to the Kalamazoo College Library.

If you want to use MeLCat but have a physical limitation that prevents you from easily going to the Kalamazoo Public Library, please let us know so we can help you obtain MeLCat resources.

Contact Hillary Berry, Circulation Supervisor, at Hillary.Berry@kzoo.edu for more information.

How do I use MeLCat through KPL?

Kalamazoo College students, faculty, and staff may become Kalamazoo Public Library patrons and request MeLCat resources. To do this:

  • Obtain a Library Card at the KPL, or when a KPL representative visits campus (dates and times below). Faculty and staff who are not Kalamazoo residents may use the campus address (1200 Academy) as their resident address. Just show your current Kalamazoo College ID as proof of employment or student status.
  • You must pick up and return items at a KPL location (the downtown library or any branch).

A KPL representative will be available at the Kalamazoo College Library to sign you up for a KPL card on these dates and times:

  • February 26, 4:00pm-5:00pm
  • March 5, 11:00am-12:00pm
  • March 14, 11:00am-12:00pm
  • April 9, 11:00am-12:00pm
  • April 18, 4:00pm-5:00pm
  • April 25, 11:00am-12:00pm

Please remember that if you have overdue or lost MeLCat items requested through the KPL, you will accrue a fine with the KPL according to their policies.

Can I borrow materials at WMU?

Students and staff will NOT be able to borrow materials from WMU with their Kalamazoo College ID until MeLCat service is restored in August 2018.

Faculty will be able to borrow materials from WMU with their Kalamazoo College ID if they request to check them out outside the MeLCat system (through a faculty reciprocal borrowing agreement between K College and WMU).

I don't live in Kalamazoo. Do I have other options?

Non-Kalamazoo residents have the choice to use their local library for MeLCat (if that library participates).  If you are not registered as a patron at your local public library, you will need to do so in order to use MeLCat.
